Birslack Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area. You can walk from the cottage along numerous footpaths leading from the village to local beauty spots and interesting sites such as Levens Hall and Gardens with its world famous topiary gardens and Wildlife Park, or Sizergh Castle, a National Trust property. There are plenty of maps and walking guides in the cottage for your use.
Kendal lies 4 miles north of the village and offers a wide variety of shops as well as an historic past that holds many treasures. Visit the beautiful 13th century Parish Church, the remains of 13th century Castle, the Quaker Tapestry plus many other attractions of this friendly town.
Windermere, England’s largest lake is just 20 minutes by car; from here you can take a steamer around the Lake stopping of at various points before continuing your journey.
It is a short drive into the heart of The Lake District enabling you to visit the busy town of Ambleside and a little further onto the beautiful village of Grasmere, home to the world famous Gingerbread! Here you can visit the church where Wordsworth is buried and find the Wordsworth museum, Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a variety of sporting activities; pony trekking can be found at a number of centres catering for all abilities whilst the adventurous cyclist will discover beauty spots totally unknown to the car traveller. Mountain biking is offered in many areas of the region none better than that available in Grizedale Forest Park. The keen golfer will find as many as 10 challenging courses within 20 miles of the village. If you prefer a more gentle pace then how about a visit to RSPB Leighton Moss where you can spend many hours watching the visiting birds or just sit in the cottage garden take in the view and relax. Or do you seek something a little more adventurous? Wind surfing, abseiling, canoeing, sailing, climbing, hot air ballooning? These activities and many others await you within the area of South Lakeland.
At the end of the day if you fancy eating out there is a fantastic pub within walking distance of the cottage; The Hare & Hounds; which serves fantastic food and beer from a local brewery. There are several pubs and restaurants within a short drive.
